WPO hosts month of activities to commemorate the life and work of Mrs Janet Jagan

Friday, 01 November 2013 19:47 Written by

The Women’s Progressive Organisation (WPO) hosted several activities during the month of October to celebrate the 93rd birth anniversary of former President of Guyana and of the WPO, the late Mrs. Janet Jagan.

On October 18, the first event was held at the Umana Yana, which took the form of an evening of song, poetry and reflections. There were presentations from the General Secretary of the PPP Clement Rohee, Mrs Indranie Chandarpal, President of the WPO, Dharamkumar Seeraj, General Secretary of the Guyana Rice Producers Association (GRPA) and Seepaul Narine of the Guyana Agricultural and General Workers Union as well as Mrs Philomena Sahoye.

The event was chaired by Ms Sheila Verasammy, General Secretary of the WPO and was well attended. Participants also had the opportunity to interact with the various leaders present.

In Essequibo, the commemoration activity took the form of a cultural programme organized by the WPO working committee on the 22nd of October and was held on the lawns of State House in that county.

This event was chaired by Juliet Coonjah, member of the WPO Secretariat. Reflections on the life of Mrs Jagan was done by Mrs Chandarpal, Mr Ishack Bashir, a stalwart of the PPP, Vice Chairman of Region 2 Vishnu Samaroo, and an old stalwart of the PPP, ‘Uncle John,’ who had the privilege of working along with Mrs Jagan when she represented the Essequibo Constituency in 1953 and 1957.

On October 24, another evening of reflection was held. This time it was at the President’s Youth Choice Building in Vryman’s Er-ven in New Amsterdam. Presentations were made by the Regional Chairman of Region 6 Mr. Permaul Armogan, Mrs Chandarpal, and Dr. Vishwa Mahadeo, Central Committee member of the PPP.

Ms Gloria Beharry member of the WPO Central Committee chaired the evening proceedings.

The event at No. 64 Village, Corentyne was held on October 26 at the Health Centre.

This venue was chosen because it was declared opened by Mrs Jagan in her capacity as Minister of Health, Housing and Labour in the PPP government of 1957-1961. This activity took the form of a Medical Outreach that saw doctors from the Skeldon and Port Mourant Hospitals participating. There were a number of health workers also who participated in providing medical services to residents of the community, which included dental and other medical checkups. A blood donation drive was also part of the activites.

Presentations were made by Mrs Chandarpal, Dr. Chand, who spoke on the Berbice Regional Health Authority and Ms Bijulee Motie, Deputy General Secretary of the WPO.

The event was chaired by Central Committee members Ramela Badrasin and Mrs Ruby Ayana. A gratis lunch was also held for participants.

The close of events was held at the Kawall Primary School at Canal # 2 on Sunday October 27.

This event was organized by the Working Committee of the West Coast Demerara arm of the WPO and was co-chaired by Ashwini Sarran and Chandrowtie Sarran member of the WPO Secretariat. There were many songs, dances, poetry and excerpts of speeches made by Mrs Jagan during her lifetime.

Mrs Chandarpal provided the feature address.

The WPO expresses its gratitude to all those who contributed to making these events a success and to all the persons who turned out in large numbers to give support.
